Review: A Dark Faerie Tale Omnibus by Alexia Purdy

Hello all!
I read Ever Shade back in December 2012 and loved it.
I was SO excited to be able to go through the
entire Omnibus of A Dark Faerie Tale now.
Thanks Netgalley!
I just want to warn you that this will be a long post!
While I was reading A Dark Faerie Tale Omnibus,
I wrote a small review for each book.
Trying to figure out how to cram it all into one review is challenging!
Here we go...
A Dark Faerie Tale Series OMNIBUS
by Alexia Purdy

Books 1-3 with 2 novellas

Shade is thrown into the Land of Faerie when she meets a mysterious Teleen warrior, made of fire and electricity. Sent on a journey to obtain a rare magic only she can wield to save the Seelie forces against the Unseelie armies, she discovers her unique inner magic and possibly a difficult choice in love.

The Unseelie Queen Aveta is not one to trifle with. She hunts Shade down for her own devices and will destroy everything Shade loves to get what she wants.

After barely escaping the clutches of the Unseelie and stripped of her newfound magic, Shade journeys to the Ice Kingdom, The Great Divide, to hopefully retrieve her bound up powers from an Ancient Faerie King named Corb− but loses her memories instead. Alongside her body guard Dylan, a former Captain of the Teleen Guard, she lays havoc to the Ice King’s fortress and forces their return to the Teleen kingdom. Hurrying to reach the Southern Realm, Shade claims her rightful throne and prepares for the upcoming battle with the Unseelie army.

This Omnibus totally received 5 stars across the board!

Format: Ebook; 29pg

REVIEW

For being a short story, Evangeline held volumes of emotion and provided much appreciated information for continuing the series. This short story delves into the tale of Evangeline, or Evie. Evangeline and her sister, Jade, both exhibit strong magical powers. However, Jade is a human witch while Evie is part faerie. The faerie in Evie is eventually called to by the forest. Jade, knowing how much it means to Evie, travels into the realm of the faeries with her sister so that she will be happy. Eventually, both sisters meet their match with faerie men. And, as the series title hints, the story of Evie and Jade becomes a dark faerie tale.

REVIEW

I originally read Ever Shade in Dec 2012. My original review is posted HERE. I adored the book and thought it was fantastic. So, when I saw A Dark Faerie Tale Omnibus on Netgalley, I couldn't click Request fast enough! I am so happy I am getting to catch up on the antics of Shade and her crew. Ever Shade is still just as fun of a read as it was the first time around.

Shade, a typical teenager, has to go on a quest to save the Seelie Court from the Unseelie Court. I love the way the character of Shade has such an infectious personality. She is thrown into a tedious journey with a huge responsibility on her shoulders and handles it (mostly) with grace. Shade does have her moments of doubt, but something good seems to always happen. Above all though, Shade keeps it real. She is true to her emotions and her heart. I think that is an important quality in making a character believable. It definitely helped up the empathy I felt for Shade in the down times.

I absolutely love all of the characters, especially Ursad. He is one of the faeries that helps Shade on her journey and there was something about him that I look forward to finding out more about. I thought Dylan was an interesting character as well. The whole aspect of the Teleen, lightning faeries such as Jack, and the fact that they are a dying race was very touching.

I am starting Ever Fire next and absolutely am dying to see what happens between Dylan and Shade!

REVIEW

I loved seeing the love triangle between Soap, Dylan and Shade develop. Watching Shade mature was an exceptional experience. Learning more about Shade's heritage with her grandmother and mother was awesome. Also, discovering things about her siblings that shocked Shade was fantastic.

Ever Fire continues where Ever Shade left off, once again finding Shade torn between her human life and her life in Faerie. Shade knows so much rests on her shoulders and tries to handle it the best she can, but she is young and learning her powers as she goes which almost makes her the weak link. Almost. Even though no one knows the full extent of her powers, Shade seems to grow stronger minute by minute. It is an amazing transformation!

I completely absorbed this book and it was such a quick, fun read! Now, I am starting Ever Winter and so looking forward to finding out more about Shade!

Title: Ever Winter (A Dark Faerie Tale #3)

REVIEW

Ever Winter was an amazing continuation of the A Dark Faerie Tale series! Poor Shade has been stripped of all her magic and is powerless. This is never a good thing when there is a faerie war raging that keeps dragging her in the middle. Shade ultimately fears for the safety of her family and friends. But, they turn out to be of great help to her in her times of need.

I tore through this book. It was just so interesting and I am completely captivated by the characters the author has created. Shade has matured into a magnificent young woman that is strong and can speak her mind very clearly. I enjoyed that aspect of her character extremely. Shade is still trying to choose between Dylan and Soap, but the decision is clearly made by the end of Ever Winter. Yay!

So, the plot is great and kept me guessing the whole way through. All of the characters are really well thought out and the imagery that Purdy created is brilliant. The Ice King was a perfect "bad guy" and his Kingdom even had me feeling a little frosty! Overall, a quick read and if you love anything to do with faeries, this series is most definitely for you.

Title: The Cursed (A Dark Faerie Tale #3.5)
Author: Alexia Purdy
Format: Ebook
Source: Netgalley

Purdy is an amazing writer! She fills a small story with a full novel worth of excitement and enchantment. Arthas comes across as an absolutely ruthless, bone-chilling character. Arthas is the only Unseelie out of four Ancient Faeries. The others are Kilara, Rowen and Corb. Arthas was betrayed by the other 3 ancients and supposed to be in an eternal slumber as a prison. When he is awoken by the blood of his kin, the trouble really starts! This is a great addition to A Dark Faerie Tale!

So, ALL of the above books are included in the Omnibus.
The following is my review of the final installment in the series,
which has to be purchased on its own.

Title: Ever Wrath (A Dark Faerie Tale #4)
Author: Alexia Purdy
Published: Sept 15, 2013
Source: Netgalley
Format: E-book

REVIEW

Ever Wrath was beyond an astounding ending to a series. The way Alexia Purdy weaves a story is undeniably brilliant. This series completely sucked me in and I was sad for it to end. Shade was such an amazing female character that exhibited enormous amounts of grace and courage. I truly appreciated experiencing the growth of Shade throughout all of the novels.

In Ever Wrath, Shade becomes a true Queen of Faerie and rightfully so. Unfortunately, bad guys Arthas and Aveta are at their wicked games to bring down the wards that separate the human world from Faerie. This would be very bad so Shade must stop them. By now, we know that Shade never backs down and always does whatever is needed of her.

I love all the other characters in this series as well. Even though Ursad really let me down, stupid faerie! Dylan was hard to warm to you at first but now he is like the best boyfriend EVER! I can really see why Shade likes him because he is a very stand up guy. It was nice to know that Shade still finds her happy fairy tale ending. Yay!

Of course, 5 stars to Ever Wrath!!
